Prepping for College Game Day!

Everyone knows Masters Week in Augusta is a special time. You just never know who you will meet! Well, Patrick was at a friend’s house, grilling and chatting with a guy, and gets invited to tailgate at College Game Day on ESPN. Patrick says, “Sure, that sounds fun. Which game do you want to do?” The guy says, “I do them all. I’m Tommy Marshall of the Road Kill Grill. We cook for all the ESPN College Gameday games.” “The first week is in Atlanta September 2nd and you are going to be my guest Chef.” Oh! So, we were going to Atlanta for the NCAA football season opener between Alabama and FSU at the new Mercedes Benz Stadium, home to the Falcon’s!

  • Of course, Patrick’s first call was to his grilling-partner-in-crime, brother in law, Ryan. They started talking menu plans. They came up with a good one:
  • Pulled Pork (of course) with butts from Savannah River Farm
  • Bacon Explosion (don’t ask, I’ll need a separate post to explain that one)
  • Grilled Pastrami Paninis (with our homemade pastrami from Tink’s Grassfed Beef brisket)
  • Grilled Peach Cobbler (yes, on the grill!)

Then we get a call from the Game Day organizer…could we also grill for the Home Depot sponsor’s VIP tent? Sure, why not? So we added to the menu:

  • Grilled chicken
  • More pulled pork
  • Potato salad
  • Pimento cheese
  • Macaroni salad
  • Deviled eggs
  • Coleslaw
  • Candied smoked pecans

As Game Day approached, we started prepping. Lots of logistics involved in feeding 60 people! The awesome guys at Rec Tec offered to loan Patrick 2 grills! (I love Rec Tec’s…so easy even this girl can grill on it!) And a few people joined our team: the always amazing Annmarie and her other half, Matt; our beautiful niece, Mary Kate; the aforementioned brother-in-law and my sister, Carrie Anne.

So, starting about a week before the big day, we began cooking! (We also had hats and t-shirts made with our new logo!!)

Heavenly!

Sitting on the porch that is the definition of home-grown comfort, Amy brought out a dish of pecans to snack on with our lavender iced tea. The pecans were sweet with a hint of salt and ... smoked! (Patrick throws a lot of stuff on the grill and in the smoker and the results are always spectacular.) The pecans were like heaven.

Between the lavender everywhere, the porch, the view, the company, and the pecans, we might just as well have been in heaven.

You'll want to go back again and again!

Among the gardens and 100-year-old farm house is a picturesque red barn where Amy and Patrick not only sell their merchandise but also entertain and/or put on workshops. I have had the pleasure of attending several of these events ranging from cookie making, to lavender harvesting and arranging, to yoga classes.

I am always looking for what they have available because once you experience the sheer beauty and peaceful feel of White Hills Farm you too will want to go back again and again.

For me, it's a place tied to fond memories

White Hills Farm is the perfect backdrop for any occasion -- it has this way of enveloping and elevating meaningful celebrations. For me, it's a place tied to fond memories and an eagerness to return. Year round, its something to behold, a slice of heaven run by the best of people.
